Haha, see what I done there? Nice. If I wrote puns as well as I write bloated code, I'd be working for a tabloid. What you gonna do? I've been trying to work on the HUD system for YoYoYo today and haven't really got very far - it's been a lot of try-this try-that stuff, but I think I've arrived at something I like, and that will be nicely flexible. It's a simulated smartphone UI, which shows you one of three screens - your status (health, cash, abilities etc), another one which is an address book (from where you can call, text and locate other people who are already in the address book), and a twitter-like feed which keeps you up to date with things like "OfficerO'Grady is chasing @DrMistry!", or "MadDan owes @DrMistry a favor!". You will see messages from anyone in your address list. You can interact with the phone by pressing Y, and using the left stick or d-pad to navigate. When you back out of the phone to return to the "main game", it'll shrink down and fade out slightly, but you'll be alerted if anything interesting happens. Your health level will always be visible on the phone screen, as a beating heart which gets faster as your health declines. The heartbeat is sorted, thanks to my actually looking at the XNA-native Curve class, which is really excellent. Why I didn't use it before I don't know, but it's really useful and lends it's self well to transitions and motion effects. Go get some!
I did get some other under-the-hood code in today too - the basis of the RPG data system, which handles health, cash, abilities and so on. No new screenies tonight, since there's pretty much nothing new to see, at least in stills. I tweaked the penguin collision response handlers to make things a little more "platformy" and cartoon-like. No DJ gig tomorrow night though so I'm hoping to get the code done in the daytime, and spend the evening working on graphic assets with my lovely wife. Saturday we've got a 40th birthday meal for our friend Jason which I'm really looking forward to, and we're having a family day on Sunday (as usual) so tomorrow's work will sit and brew over the weekend and I'll come back fresh on Monday morning! Our sales figures are getting better and better for all our titles at hte moment (with the exception of Carrum, but that's the least strong of our titles anyway I think) so life is good! Pip pip my dears!
